As the name suggests, a tuxedo shirt is a formal shirt that is specially designed to be worn with a tuxedo for a formal event. Also known as formal shirts and dress shirts, these garments are high quality and made from cotton or linen. The tuxedo shirt is traditionally created in either white or off white and comes complete with a bibbed from that is either pleated or marcella.
The tuxedo shirt was introduced in the early part of the 19th century an d were stiff shirts that were worn with winged and detachable collars. In the years that followed shirts were usually attached with a fold over collar or a special winged collar to add a unique touch to this formal shirt. Shirt studs that resembled cuff links were also used to attach the collar to the shirt. One of the main advantages of the detachable collar is that it could be washed and ironed separately and a lot of starch was usually used to give the collar a crisp look and make it stand up from the shirt.
Towards the end of the century 20th century tuxedo shirts featured a stiff front that was often worn with a white tie. Ruffled bibs became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, although this style is no longer popular today. For really specially occasions studs and cufflinks on tuxedo shirts can be made from gems such as onyx or even gold.
While tuxedo shirts traditionally come in white, these days they also come in a range of other colours such as dark blue and white with stripes of bright colours to really make them stand out. You can also choose a tuxedo shirt in pure white with coloured buttons that match the colour of your tuxedo to create a sharp and stylish look. This allows the wearer to really make a statement and let their personality shine through while perfectly fitting a formal occasion.
